Le Grand Pezet with Baby Friendly Boltholes
Holidays have a new meaning when you have kids. The checklists of amenities far out weigh anything you have ever imagined and organising them takes military planning. By the time you reach your destination you are well and truly ready to kick back and unwind. We have tried our hand at various different holidays – in villas, in the UK, hotels, resorts and holidays with friends. All have suited us at different stages of our parenting life but the secret of a successful holiday is largely down to where you stay and how long it takes you to reach there.
In May, we joined forces with some friends whose children are of similar ages to Finn (5) & Olivia (3) and headed to Le Grand Pezet, in Poitou Charentes, a region of South West France. Set in the rural French countryside, Le Grand Pezet, transports you away from the hustle and bustle of city life into a calm and relaxing bolthole. Le Grand Pezet, is nestled just over an hour away from Bordeaux airport and is a short drive away from picturesque Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne, a little villagefilled withlots of pretty shops and cobbled streets to ramble over and not a Mcdonalds or Starbucks in sight, the feeling of truly being on holiday was upon us. Before we headed to the house, we made a pit stop at the local Supermache in Brossee to stock up on supplies for the weekend.
Now back to Le Grand Pezet, this beautiful farmhouse sleeps up to 13 people with an separate annex’s if you wanted to invite the grandparents or a couple without kids. The design is opulent & contemporary, whilst still holding some of its authentic original French charm.
As you walk into Le Grand Pezet, the ground has pockets of calm throughout, decorated with muted stone style interiors giving you a sense of relaxation. On the ground floor there are two spectacular en-suite bathrooms, with ample room to add cot beds should you wish to keep the kids with you. Also, on the ground floor is a large kitchen diner, perfect for entertaining large groups. A separate dining room and a living area. A spacious outside dining area is perfect for alfresco dining or just chilling when you want some shade. I was blown away by the detail throughout. The kitchen is spacious and has everything you need to entertain. There are three ways to leave the kitchen either into the hall, the dining room or the garden. As you step into the garden you are presented with the most specular views of the grounds which features a pool, a playhouse and a lovely verandah. The pool wasn’t heated but it didn’t stop the Daddies and kids taking a dip in the pool to cool off when the days were exceptionally hot. Did I mention we went in May and the temperatures were over 30 degrees!
The first floor had a magnificent bedroom with an en-suite which over looked the living area. The floor first had two further bedrooms for the kids, with two single beds in each room.
Our days would be spent exploring the grounds, hanging out at the pool or exploring the surrounding villages. We would usually spend our evenings firing up the bbq and relaxing on the varandah until night fall, where we would retreat into the living area to listen to records. It was just so peaceful. If we stayed a little longer, we would have explored the surrounding villages on bikes.
Le Grand Pezet the perfect place to holiday with friends and family. Its sooo big, you could truly lose yourself it in and you are guaranteed to truly unwind.
It’s particularly goodfor young families who don’t want to travel far. I wish I knew about Le Grand Pezet when the kids were a little younger it would have been perfect in the early days of motherhood or for a quiet getaway during term time.
There is so much to keep the littles occupied, whether it’s roaming free in the grounds, hanging out in the in the playhouse, enjoying the garden games, bouncing on the trampoline, a spot of table tennis, just getting out of the sun or playing with the house toys and watching a movie..
If you get itchy feet and fancy a day out. There are lots of lovely places to visit such as the lakeside resort of Etang Vallier which is only a few miles away from Le Grand Pezet, with a sandy beachand watersports, bungee trampolines, pony rides, mini golf, and restaurants. For the grown-ups, numerous local vineyards offer tours with tastings of the local Pineau aperitif and the famous brandy houses at Cognac are just under an hour’s drive. Wine Tasting tours can also be easily arranged.
Speaking of which, the owner Kate was so lovely at guiding us through the house and things to do on our stay. We felt truly looked after and quickly settled into French life within minutes of arriving.
Le Grand Pezet, we created some amazing memories and we look forward to doing the same again soon.
The Holiday was gifted by Baby Friendly BoltHoles. All opinions are mine and have been no way influenced by Baby Friendly Boltholes or the Owner. Our stay was awesome and we would highly recommend it to anyone with young families such as ours. We holidayed with friends and would definitely visit Le Grand Pezet again in the same way as it is the perfect place to share those happy holiday memories with.
