Today, Emily shares her tips on starting a business, how she runs a successful enterprise and who she would invite to her ultimate dinner party. Be prepared to be inspired.

Welcome to The Curious Mummy, Emily tell us a bit about yourself?

In my freetime, I love taking our dog Merlin for walks and to see my friends too. My friends and family are very important to me – nothing makes me happier or makes time pass quicker than spending time with them. I was at Downe House for my GCSEs and then Uppingham for sixth form before going onto read Classics and English at university. I absolutely adored this and my love for reading continues! I love nothing more than curling up by the fire with a good book!

When it comes to work, I am passionate about children’s education and a qualified teacher. Competition for both entrance and national exams is very much on the rise .Kings Tutors, as a consequence, realises that many students need to have a little bit of support when it comes to their revision and overall preparation. Kings Tutors is able to offer that support network that some students may need.

Tell us about Kings Tutors and what gave you the idea to start?

Kings Tutors provides private tuition in London. We are one of the UK’s leading private tutoring agencies, providing academic tuition both in person and online to our clients in London, the UK and across the globe. We offer a full portfolio of services to assist your tuition requirements including tailored private tuition, academic assessment, school consultancy, relocation support and homeschooling programmes.

When tutoring throughout university, I noticed that too many children did not have the support they needed to pass the increasingly competitive school entrance examinations or the support to cope with the pressure put upon them. This is an issue that is close to my heart. I strongly believe that tutoring can be something that can work alongside formal education and that it focuses on individual styles of learning. This how Kings Tutors began! I did a brief stint in the Financial Services and then left to start Kings Tutors in addition to becoming a qualified teacher too.

I am now a board member of The Tutors’ Association’s “Continuing Professional Development” panel, an industry-led initiative which seeks to promote best practice in tutoring. This strives to raise the industry’s standards and professionalism for both tutors and parents.  Furthermore, Kings Tutors was very excitingly voted the best company for graduates to work for in the “Charity, Education and Public Services” sector at The JobCrowd Award ceremony.

If a parent approached you, how would you help them find the perfect tutor?

This is the most important part of our business and it is something we pride ourselves on. The Good Schools Guide recently supported this by writing that ‘Matching is meticulous and a key strength of Kings Tutors’ in their review of our agency. Finding the right tutor for a child is crucial if a good rapport is to be made. Typically, we find out the child’s tutoring requirements and also find out about their personality too. This will help us to pick a tutor who will inspire the tutee in their studies in addition to providing them with the best tutoring possible.

What age group do you tutor?

We cover all ages from 5 onwards! We typically offer school and university tuition, however, we have assisted with adults wanting to learn a new language and a few Mothers retaking their GCSEs too so that they can return to education to change the direction of their careers.

What subjects do you cover?

We cover all subjects on the National Curriculum. Kings Tutors offers private tutoring services to those studying for their Common Entrance, GCSE, Pre-U, IB  and A Level exams throughout the United Kingdom.

Tell us more about the course camps and workshops?

We run various courses in London for exam preparation. The idea is that these are fun as well as educational. We will focus on exam technique and course content but then also incorporate a Music, Drama or Art workshop into the day too! It is not right for children to be ‘all work and no play”!

We also run holiday camps in the summer holidays. Kings Camps knows how much there is to learn and explore outside of the classroom. With an action packed itinerary, we aim to give children a fun and unique experience that will be a highlight of the summer holidays. All of our activities are very varied so that children have the opportunity to explore as many extra-curricular interests as possible.

All of our camps are led by qualified primary school teachers who have created a unique programme; we aim to have fun outside and for the children to be learning without realising!

Describe your typical day?

My typical day includes going to work with Merlin the dog and trying my utmost to match tutors up to parents. I am in charge of tutor recruitment so this is usually a large part of my day. Every day is different due to every enquiry being different. In the evenings, I love cooking a delicious supper with my husband (he is much better at cooking than me so he is definitely the chef and I am the sous chef!), seeing friends or being outside if it is not dark or raining!

What is the best part of your job?

I love meeting lots of new people, both tutors and clients, the whole time. It is also always brilliant to learn how our tutors have had an enormous impact on tutees’ studies and their self-confidence too. Kings Tutors is a very personal service so we are in constant contact with families and tailoring our services to meet each tutees’ requirements.

After work, how do you find time to relax?

I make a habit of switching at the weekends to enjoy spending time with my husband, friends and family. I try to switch off most evenings too.

What are your top five tips for starting a successful business?

  1. Be passionate about what you are doing and believe in your idea! This is crucial because there will times when you doubt yourself and you need to remember why you started your journey.
  2. Ignorance is bliss as is being naive! If you knew how hard it was going to be then you probably would not do it and thus not follow your dream!
  3. Communication is key –  talk to others! Bounce ideas around with other people! Two heads are better than one….
  4. Remember to not think about work at all every now and again. It is vital that you have breaks from work. This will help you to return feeling energised and you will be able to look at everything with a fresh pair of eyes.
  5. Go For It!!

If you were to host the ultimate dinner party and you could invite anyone in the world, who would be on your guest list?

Anyone…..?! Ron Weasley, Beatrix Potter, Roger Federer, Santa Montefiore, David Attenborough and Winston Churchill…. I wish it could happen!

Kings Tutors are waiving the £60 registration fee to anyone who quotes CURIOUSMUMMY and books at least four tuition sessions.
